Bob van de Wiel at Southern Utah University

Bob van de Wiel Fall 2021 Southern Utah University (fee-paying) - Utah, United States of America

Overall experiences stay abroad
Overall, I would highly recommend a study abroad, in the beginning it was hard to adjust especially socially, because of the differences between the Netherlands and Utah. However, once I was adjusted it was easy to make friends, I think this is mainly due to the reason that there is something like a campus life. We stayed with all the international students in an apartment complex, which was great. There was always someone to talk to, to do something with or even just to have dinner with. As for personal experiences, Utah is an amazing state it has many state parks, I’ve visited almost all of them.

Experiences about culture & country
I think the minor abroad helped me adjusting to a new setting and different culture, I think this is something which will help me in the future. Furthermore, it helped me to understand how the US people like to work and like to see. I’ve chosen for this country because I think it is important, especially with my study program, to know what a good standard is to communicate with foreign people epically according to the US standards. Life in Cedar was pretty calm, which I think was amazing, there isn’t much to do in Cedar apart form all the amazing national parks. During my minor abroad I did a small trip to a couple of national parks in Arizona and Utah, during this road trip I ended on route 89A.

Motivation study programme/assignment
SUU helped me to establish friendships with foreign and US people, furthermore they helped me to understand how important it is to, not only study but also to see more of your surroundings and taking time for yourself. For my minor I’ve chosen mostly electronic courses, which would be helpful in the rest of my professional career. In the beginning I thought the courses would be really hard, but SUU and the teachers helped me to get the best out of me.

Ambassadorship FHICT
I think I can help people choosing for a partner university in the USA, furthermore I can help with the first adjusting problems, for example the culture shock. I tried to be an ambassador for SUU students who wanted to do a minor abroad, I would recommend them Fontys, especially if the wanted to do something with electronics and programming. Most of my friends at Fontys already know my stories, however I am willing to share more experiences with anyone.
