Abstract for the BIP "Weaving Civilisations"
École de Design Nantes Atlantique is organizing an international project week in May 2025.
This workshop investigates the connections between urban forms, grids and networks (roads, railways, digital systems) and the art of textile weaving, exploring how these structures shape our environments and reflect cultural, historical, and symbolic meanings. Participants will delve into the parallels between urban forms and textile patterns, focusing on the intercultural threads that bind civilizations together.
In partnership with Gabriel.dk, a renowned textile manufacturer, the workshop will combine material exploration, critical reflection, and creative production. The outcome will be a collaboratively crafted artifact symbolizing the intertwining of individual and collective perspectives on urban and cultural networks.
Participants
Open to 20 students, advanced English speakers, enrolled in digital studies, architectural design, urban design, fashion and textile design (bachelor/master levels). We can send 10 Fontys students ICT & Media Design!

The virtual session introduces participants to the historical, cultural, and technical dimensions of weaving, linking it to urban and symbolic networks. A masterclass by Gabriel.dk will explore textile materials and design applications, complemented by a hands-on tutorial from a professional artisan. Students will be encouraged to create an initial individual pattern and reflect on materials they may bring to integrate into the collaborative workshop.
